Creative Wanderlust Prompt: Amusement Park
With Spring Break in full force around the US and many folks hitting up amusement parks, I thought it would be fun to come up with some creative ways to explore an Amusement Park! In my Wanderlust Los Angeles book, I actually have a chapter on Amusement Parks, as they make up a big tourist aspect of LA as well as have a really interesting history. I’ll share more about that in future posts, but in the mean time, let’s get creative at an Amusement Park! Daily Creative Wanderlust Prompts: Amusement Park Monday – Draw a map of your dream amusement park. Tuesday – Use wild filters on photos from a trip to…

Creative Wanderlust Prompt: Mardi Gras
I can only imagine the buzz that is happening in Rio de Janiero, Brazil;, New Orleans, Louisiana; and Venice, Italy right now! It is Mardi Gras time (otherwise known as Carnevale in Venice and Carnaval do Brasil in Rio.) These cities are living it up before the religious season of Lent begins. Lent is a 40 day period that comes before Easter in the Christian calendar. It begins on Ash Wednesday, and ends with the Easter celebration. It is a season to reflect on the passion and sacrifices made by Jesus with fasting and penitence. Thus, the week before Lent begins cities around the world celebrate with one long party!! The…

Creative Wanderlust Prompt: Las Vegas
What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas… well not true this week. Let’s use this glitter town as inspiration to get creative! This week we are heading to Sin City to be inspired by all things Vegas! For those who have never been, Las Vegas, Nevada is quite a sight to see. Not just for all the things we think about when we hear of Vegas (lights, gambling, night clubs, show girls, partying) but what I find most fascinating is a how a trading post along the Spanish Trail in the Mojave Desert (Vegas in Spanish means “the meadows”) turned into one of the world’s top tourist destinations and has…

Art School: How to Draw a Mask
Masks are a part of many celebrations around the world, namely Carnevale in Venice, Italy; Carnaval do Brazil; and Mardi Gras in New Orleans. Some believe masks were a pagan practice to ward off evil spirits, but now they are more worn for anonymity and decoration. Enjoy this tutorial and have fun designing your own decorative mask for any occasion.

Wanderlust Patterns: Frida Loteria Surface Design Collection
Having just finished a biography about Frida Kahlo I was eager to illustrate a portrait of her. She is by far one of the most iconic artists in history, most likely from her very progressive yet challenging life she lead. From a severe accident when she was young that lead her to a lifetime of disabilities and ailments to her tumultuous relationship with Diego Rivera and vivid art work it’s no wonder people honor her. I loved pairing Mexican loteria cards with her portrait. The symbolic nature of the cards seem to pair nicely with her mystic. I also enjoyed creating the serape-inspired striped pattern. It is the perfect complement to…

Culture: Entertainment – Opera Houses of the World
Growing up my father used to blare opera in his car on his way to and from work. I’d always know when he was home as I heard his car rumble down the driveway with a woman “screaming” at the top of her lungs. Well, screaming is what I thought of opera when I was young… but lo and behold, the more I listened to it, and the more my dad educated me on the stories, the singing and more, the more I liked it. Some of my most favorite memories of living in New York City was when my father came to town and took me to the Met. One…

Culture: Loteria – the Latin American Game of Bingo
The first time I played Loteria was poolside in Cancun. We had just ambled up from the sugar sand beach to take a dip in the pool. The ambiance by the pool was quite different than at the shore. Pop music blared at a deafening level, and waiters and waitresses buzzed around the lounge chairs serving mas cervesas to the sunburned Northerners. A little put off, I found a chair to put my stuff and hopped into the pool. When I popped up for a breath, there was an announcement on the loud speaker, “Loteria to begin in 3 minutes! Prizes for the winner” shouted our poolside cruise director. Well…
